A city laid out like reindeer antlers

In September 1944 Finland and the Soviet Union agreed an armistice that required Finland to drive German troops out of the country, sparking the Lapland War. In October that year retreating German forces began destroying Rovaniemi, and the town was almost razed. In 1945 the architect Alvar Aalto drew up a new plan for it, with the main roads and green spaces laid out in the shape of a reindeer's head and antlers — the famous 'reindeer antler plan'.

Contexto cultural

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland. Its centre is about 6 km south of the Arctic Circle, where the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers meet, and the Arctic Circle line is painted in Santa Claus Village to the north. In the Lapland War of 1944 retreating German troops almost razed Rovaniemi to the ground. In 1945 the architect Alvar Aalto drew up a new plan for the city, with its main roads and green spaces laid out in the shape of a reindeer's head and antlers — the 'reindeer antler plan'. In winter the forests and lakeshores outside town, far from lights, are popular places to see the aurora in Finland.

  • chances are usually best between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. Get away from city lights, bring a tripod and dress very warmly.
