Contexto cultural
Charyn Canyon was carved and weathered by the Charyn River over millions of years; its long walls of red sandstone form castle-like rock pillars in the desert, which locals call the 'Valley of Castles'. The green oasis of the Charyn valley at the bottom contrasts sharply with the red rock, and the valley holds a grove of Sogdian ash thought to be a relic of the Ice Age.
Costumbres locales
Kazakh herders move through the canyon area to summer pastures, and you may come across yurts and horses on the way — say hello before taking photos. Locals are hospitable and often invite passers-by to drink kumis (fermented mare's milk).
Religión y creencias
- A natural landscape with no religious restrictions
- some Kazakhs pray at a sacred spring in the valley, so please don't disturb them.
