Contexto cultural

7,000 years of salt mining made the village rich and one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited places. Wooden houses rise in tiers between lake and mountains, the salt-mine funicular takes you up for a view of this 'fairyland', and beneath the Skywalk lies deep lake water. Guangdong in China once built a 1:1 copy of it — perhaps the ultimate certificate of its beauty. In the early morning, before the mist lifts, it looks least of this world.

Costumbres locales

  • The village has only about 800 residents and a quiet life, so don't be loud
  • drones are banned (by order of the municipal council)
  • be quiet when visiting the church and cemetery.

Religión y creencias

  • A Catholic village, where the parish church and the 'Beinhaus' (bone house, with painted skulls commemorating the dead) form a unique landscape of faith
  • come with respect and don't joke around.
