Historia
A rhinoceros on the tower
Belém Tower was designed by the military architect Francisco de Arruda and completed in 1519, two years before King Manuel I died. The base of one of its corner turrets bears a carved rhinoceros, considered the first rhinoceros sculpture in Western European art, probably depicting the rhino given to Manuel by an Indian ruler and passed on by him to Pope Leo X in 1515.

Contexto cultural
Built in 1514–1520 to defend against pirates and commemorate Vasco da Gama's opening of the sea route to India, its Manueline carvings of ropes and armillary spheres etch the memory of the sea in stone. Five hundred years ago, exploration ships set sail from here into the unknown, and Belém Tower was the empire's 'gate of departure'. The nearby Monument to the Discoveries and the Jerónimos Monastery are also World Heritage, and the scent of custard tarts (Pastéis de Belém) has drifted on the river breeze for nearly two centuries.
Costumbres locales
