Contexto cultural

The Vasa sank on her maiden voyage and slept for 333 years in the mud of Stockholm harbour; raised in 1961 with 98% of her original structure, she is the best-preserved 17th-century warship in the world. More than 700 sculptures tell of the ambitions of Sweden's 'Age of Greatness', and in the museum's dim light the rise and fall of an empire washes over you. Swedes have complicated feelings about her: pride in the craftsmanship, regret at the hubris.

Costumbres locales

  • Swedes are reserved and punctual, and 'fika' (coffee time) is sacred
  • speak softly in the museum
  • queuing and booking are basic courtesy.

Religión y creencias

  • A Swedish Lutheran tradition
  • the biblical sculptures on the Vasa's bow reflect the religious world-view of the time
  • the museum is a secular place.
