Historia

The church Gaudí spent his life building

On 19 March 1882 work on the Sagrada Família began under the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar; the following year Villar resigned and the young Gaudí took over, turning it into a work blending Gothic with curving Art Nouveau. Gaudí devoted the rest of his life to the church and was buried in its crypt. In 1936 anarchists set fire to the crypt and broke into the workshop, destroying some of Gaudí's original drawings. On 7 November 2010 Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the church and declared it a minor basilica.

Contexto cultural

Begun in 1882; Gaudí devoted 43 years to it after taking over, and when he died in 1926 only about a quarter was complete. Today the carvings of the Nativity and Passion façades and the forest-like columns and vaults have astonished the world, the stained glass shifting with the sunlight, the whole church like a three-dimensional Bible. It is the soul of Catalan Modernisme and the ultimate expression of the aesthetics of the 'unfinished'.

Costumbres locales

  • Spaniards keep late hours — lunch at 2 p.m., dinner after 9 p.m.
  • dress modestly to visit the basilica (shoulders covered) and keep quiet
  • Barcelona has many pickpockets, so keep valuables close.

Religión y creencias

  • A Catholic minor basilica where services are still held. Don't be loud or fool around in prayer areas
  • climbing the towers and visiting the crypt (where Gaudí lies) should both be done with respect.
