Contexto cultural

The icefjord has been home to Greenland's Inuit for a thousand years; giant icebergs calved from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier drift slowly through Disko Bay. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. In town, dog sleds are still important for winter transport and hunting, and hunters' knowledge is passed down the generations; colourful wooden houses stand out against the snowfields and pack ice.

Costumbres locales

Hunting culture is very much alive: in summer you can see hunters drying sealskins — a livelihood, not a show. Street signs warn 'beware of dog sleds', and sled dogs are working partners, not pets.

Religión y creencias

  • Most Greenlanders are Lutheran, and Zion's Church is the town's landmark
  • traces of traditional shamanic belief remain in legends and place names, and reverence for nature runs deep.
