Contexto cultural
Opened in 2017, the museum is the only overseas partner to carry the name of the Louvre in Paris. The architect Jean Nouvel, inspired by traditional Arabic palm-leaf weaving, designed a perforated dome 180 m across through which sunlight falls as a 'rain of light'. The galleries break down regional boundaries and set objects side by side by theme — Chinese bronzes and African masks in the same room — the most direct illustration of its theme of civilisations meeting.
