Raffles and the 'rediscovery' of Borobudur

Borobudur is a Mahayana Buddhist stupa built by the Sailendra dynasty in the 9th century, decorated with 2,672 relief panels and originally 504 Buddha statues. After the Hindu kingdoms of Java declined in the 14th century and the population converted to Islam, the monument was gradually abandoned. In 1814 Stamford Raffles, then Lieutenant-Governor of British Java, learned its location from local people, and described 'Bóro Bódo' in his 'History of Java' published in 1817, bringing it back to the world's attention.

Contexto cultural

A 9th-century stone mandala of the Sailendra dynasty: 2,672 relief panels tell the Jataka tales of the Buddha's lives, and 72 bell-shaped stupas surround the main stupa — the largest Buddhist structure in the southern hemisphere, inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1991. Neither the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake nor the 2010 volcanic ash could dim its glory; at Vesak, ten thousand lights and gatherings of monks make it Southeast Asian Buddhism's annual festival.

Costumbres locales

  • Dress appropriately in the monument area (shoulders and knees covered
  • sarongs are provided at the entrance)
  • you must change into soft-soled shoes to climb (to protect the stone)
  • don't climb the stupas or touch the Buddha statues.

Religión y creencias

  • A Mahayana Buddhist sacred site (Indonesia is now mainly Muslim, and Borobudur is an island of Buddhist heritage). Keep quiet and walk clockwise
  • don't obstruct ceremonies during Vesak.
