William the Conqueror
William the Conqueror · United Kingdom
Duke of Normandy and first Norman king of England
Duke of Normandy from 1035. After Edward the Confessor died in 1066 he invaded England with a Franco-Norman army, defeated Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings, and was crowned William I in Westminster Abbey that Christmas. He then crushed a series of English revolts — the Norman Conquest — and built the Tower of London to overawe its people.

The Conqueror's White Tower
The Tower of London was founded at the end of 1066, during the Norman Conquest. The White Tower, which gives the castle its name, is generally thought to have been begun by William the Conqueror around 1078, at first a hated symbol of oppression for Londoners. From the early 14th century to the time of Charles II in the 17th, English monarchs usually spent a few nights in the Tower before their coronation, then processed from here to Westminster Abbey.
