Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
In the "Kuroshio Sea" main tank, three whale sharks swim alongside manta rays; its 22.5-meter-wide viewing window was once among the world's largest — Okinawa has moved the whole East China Sea indoors.
Location
Motobu Town, Okinawa Prefecture, inside Ocean Expo Park
Stories and legends
No myths or legends; "chura" (美ら) means "beautiful" in the Okinawan dialect, so the name means "beautiful sea."
History and context
Its predecessor was the aquarium of the 1975 Okinawa International Ocean Expo; the current building opened in 2002. The main "Kuroshio Sea" tank holds about 7,500 tons of water, with an acrylic panel 8.2 meters high, 22.5 meters wide, and 60 centimeters thick (the world's largest at opening). Long-term whale-shark keeping with several individuals swimming together, and large-scale in-house coral breeding (successful sexual reproduction), are its research signatures; the park also has a free dolphin show (the Okichan Theater) plus sea turtle and manatee houses.
Local life
Half the aquarium's charm lies outside: Ocean Expo Park faces Ie Island, and at sunset the sea turns gold while local families picnic on the lawn and watch the dolphin show — more Okinawan than the halls themselves. Its educational narrative stresses that "the Okinawan sea is not a backdrop but a neighbor" — the Kuroshio bringing migratory fish, coral spawning, and coexistence with typhoons are all exhibit themes.
Customs
The dolphin show is an outdoor free performance with fixed sessions — check in advance; on holidays, local Okinawan families with children make up the majority.
Beliefs
No specific religious association; its main cultural identity is marine science education.
Local etiquette
No flash in front of the main tank; do not knock on the panel; swimming at the park's beach area (Emerald Beach) is limited to designated seasons and zones — do not enter the sea on your own; Okinawan sun is strong and the park's walking stretches are unshaded, so guard against heat.
Visiting notes
Best on weekdays and in winter (clear sea conditions, comfortable park); the express bus from Naha takes about 2 hours; buy tickets online in advance to skip the ticket queue; combine with the Bise fukugi tree lane and Nakijin Castle ruins on one line in a day.
What to eat nearby
Okinawa soba (沖縄そば, pork-bone / bonito broth with sanmai-niku pork belly); sea grapes (海ぶどう, umi-budō); taco rice (タコライス); Agu pork dishes (アグー豚); Okinawa-only ice-cream flavors such as Blue Seal's salt flavor
The Motobu market and around Toguchi Port, restaurants around Ocean Expo Park, Kyoda rest stop (on the way)
Sea grapes must not soak long in the dipping sauce (they shrivel) — dip and eat at once; Okinawa soba shops mostly serve lunch hours and close when sold out
Okinawa soba 800–1,100 yen (about 38–52 yuan, for reference only); set meals 1,300–2,000 yen (about 61–94 yuan, for reference only)
Aquarium tickets sometimes have discounted entry after 16:00 (per the official site); by car, the Kyoda interchange on the Okinawa Expressway is the smoothest approach.
