Culture

Cultura y costumbres

Contexto cultural

A sacred place of the Ancestral Puebloans; at the end of the 19th century the explorer Powell rafted down it, and it has been a totem of the American wilderness spirit ever since. The Desert View Drive on the South Rim links a dozen viewpoints, and at sunrise the canyon turns from deep purple to ochre red; hike down to the bottom and the rock layers take you from about 270 million to about 1.8 billion years ago — every step a journey through geological time.

Costumbres locales

  • America's national-park culture is mature: keep to marked trails and take your rubbish with you
  • tipping culture (15–20% in restaurants)
  • don't feed wildlife in the park.

Religión y creencias

  • Indigenous peoples (the Havasupai and others) regard the canyon as sacred
  • respect Indigenous culture — don't take stones or enter tribal lands without permission.

Driving in the US: what to do when police pull you over

  • Signal right and pull over safely to the right
  • Roll down your window after stopping, before the officer reaches you
  • At night, turn on the interior light
  • Keep both hands on the wheel and ask passengers to keep their hands visible too
  • Getting out and walking towards the police car
  • Suddenly reaching for the glovebox, a pocket or under the seat

Sudden movements may be read as a threat and become dangerous. The wording of the rules varies slightly between states.
