Contexto cultural

Limestone eroded by the Southern Ocean over millions of years, giant stacks standing in the sea, called the 'Twelve Apostles' though there were never twelve: at the start of the 21st century there were nine; two collapsed in 2005 and 2009, and seven remain — nature reminding us of impermanence by 'disappearing'. The Great Ocean Road itself was built as a 'memorial road' for First World War veterans, its 244 km linking the Shipwreck Coast, London Bridge and Loch Ard Gorge; walking down Gibson Steps to the beach to look up at the Apostles is the most stunning viewpoint.

Costumbres locales

  • Australians drive on the left, and the Great Ocean Road is winding, so drive carefully.

Victorians recommend 'driving the Great Ocean Road in reverse' (inland to the Twelve Apostles first) to avoid crowds, and appreciate visitors who get up early for sunrise rather than just ticking it off.
