Contexto cultural
Kuanzhai Alley is made up of three parallel old streets — Kuan Xiangzi, Zhai Xiangzi and Jing Xiangzi — remnants of the Qing-dynasty 'Shaocheng' (Manchu City), built in 1718; after redevelopment in 2008 it became 'old Chengdu's negative and the new city's living room'. In courtyard houses of grey brick and dark tiles, teahouses, Sichuan restaurants and creative shops stand side by side, and the word 'bashi' (comfy) sums up Chengdu's attitude to life.
Costumbres locales
- Chengdu people love teahouses, where one gaiwan of tea lasts an afternoon
- ear cleaning and Sichuan opera face-changing are common teahouse entertainments. Hotpot, chuan chuan and dandan noodles are everyday fare, and locals start their hotpot at 'mild'.
Religión y creencias
- Wenshu Monastery (a Buddhist Chan monastery) is nearby
- the alleys themselves have no religious character
- keep quiet when visiting temples.
