Cultura y costumbres

Contexto cultural

An industrial-heritage village on the Zaan, where 8 windmills still grind flour, press oil and saw timber, and the smells of clog workshops and cheese farms fill the lanes. It isn't a stage set — craftsmen carry on 17th-century skills, and windmill silhouettes in the mist are the Dutch nostalgia for the 'Golden Age'. In tulip season, the fields outside the village and the windmills in one frame are unreally beautiful.

Costumbres locales

  • The Dutch are direct and punctual — be on time for booked visits
  • much of the village is private homes and workshops, so don't enter gardens
  • cycling is the national mode of transport, so pedestrians shouldn't walk in cycle lanes.

Religión y creencias

  • Religion in the Netherlands is diverse and secularised, and the windmill village has no religious character
  • if the village church is open, keep quiet inside.
