Contexto cultural

The cog railway opened in 1912 is a marvel of engineering, running through the north face of the Eiger to Europe's highest railway station. Below the Sphinx observatory, the Aletsch Glacier pours out like the Milky Way; ice sculptures glitter in the Ice Palace, and on the snowfields outside you can sledge and snow-tube. It symbolises the Swiss spirit of 'conquering the Alps' and is a favourite place for honeymoons and proposals.

Costumbres locales

  • The Swiss are punctual to the minute, and trains run to the second
  • public places are very quiet and rubbish sorting is strict
  • mountain weather is changeable, so keep your plans flexible.

Religión y creencias

  • Protestantism and Catholicism coexist in Switzerland
  • the Jungfraujoch has no religious character
  • be quiet when visiting mountain chapels (such as Wengen's church).

Consejos de viaje

  • Good all year: summer (June–September) has the most stable weather, and winter snow is the most magical but bitterly cold. Tickets are expensive (about CHF 200+ return), with discounts on the Swiss Travel Pass — be sure to book seat reservations on the official website in advance
  • stay in Interlaken or Grindelwald and take the first train up in the morning to beat the crowds
  • sunscreen and sunglasses are essential — the risk of snow blindness is high.
