A dome taken on by a man in his seventies
On 1 January 1547 Michelangelo, then in his seventies, succeeded Antonio da Sangallo the Younger as chief architect of St Peter's Basilica. He said he took on the job 'only for the love of God and in honour of the Apostle'. He returned to Bramante's Greek-cross plan and redesigned the dome; when he died in 1564 the drum beneath the dome was complete, and the dome itself was built after his death by Giacomo della Porta and others.

Contexto cultural
Said to stand over the tomb of St Peter, it took Renaissance and Baroque masters 120 years in relay to build. Michelangelo's dome, Bernini's bronze baldachin and the colonnades of St Peter's Square form the pinnacle of Western architecture. At Easter and Christmas the Pope celebrates high mass here, with the square packed with people — the 'promised land' for Catholics worldwide.
Costumbres locales
- You must be appropriately dressed to enter (shoulders and knees covered), and security is strict
- stand silently during mass and prayers, and don't make noise.
Religión y creencias
- The holiest site of Roman Catholicism. Visiting is pilgrimage: don't take photos with your back to the altar or laugh loudly
- climbing the dome and visiting the grottoes are religious experiences — come with reverence.
