Ashoka's pillar

After the bloody war to conquer Kalinga, Ashoka of the Maurya dynasty gradually converted to Buddhism and vigorously promoted its spread across Asia. In 249 BC he made a pilgrimage to Lumbini and erected a stone pillar whose inscription records this as the birthplace of the Buddha. The pillar still stands beside the Maya Devi Temple today and is the key evidence identifying Lumbini as the Buddha's birthplace.

Contexto cultural

According to tradition, Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini in 623 BC. In 249 BC Ashoka made a pilgrimage here and raised a stone pillar to mark it; its inscription can still be read. Beneath the Maya Devi Temple in the sacred garden is a stone marking the exact spot of the Buddha's birth; the site became a World Heritage Site in 1997. Around the sacred garden, Buddhist communities from many countries have built monasteries in strikingly different styles — Thai, Japanese, Burmese and Chinese pagodas stand side by side.

Costumbres locales

  • The sacred garden is large, so rent a bicycle to visit the monasteries of different countries
  • there are often ceremonies on full-moon days.

Religión y creencias

  • For Buddhists around the world this is the foremost holy site, with monks chanting and meditating all day
  • the birth stone and sacred pool at the Maya Devi Temple are the heart of the pilgrimage, so please keep silent.
