Contexto cultural

In 810 Doge Agnello Participazio moved the government from the island of Malamocco to today's Rialto area and began building the Doge's Palace. The earliest palace burned in a 10th-century revolt and was rebuilt several times; the Venetian Gothic palace we see today was begun around 1340, with the lagoon-facing wing completed first, and in 1424 Doge Foscari extended the work to the wing facing the Piazzetta. It housed the doge's residence as well as government offices and prisons. It has been a museum since 1923.
