The Humble Administrator's Garden was begun around 1509, early in the Ming Zhengde era, by the censor Wang Xianchen after he left office and returned home; its name comes from a line in the Jin poet Pan Yue's 'Rhapsody on Living in Idleness': 'this, too, is the government of a humble man'. Divided into eastern, central and western parts around water, with the Hall of Distant Fragrance, Fragrant Isle and Mountain-in-View Tower spread along the water, it takes 'borrowed scenery' and 'seeing the large in the small' to their peak, and is called 'the mother of Chinese gardens'. It became a World Heritage Site in 1997 as a representative of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou.
Costumbres locales
- Suzhou people call visiting gardens 'squeezing into gardens'
- peonies in spring and lotus in summer at the Humble Administrator's Garden are seasonal outings for old Suzhou residents. Pingtan storytelling and Kunqu opera are often performed in the garden, and the soft Wu dialect suits the gardens best
- Suzhou hosts always 'start with tea', and a cup of Biluochun in a teahouse outside is standard.
Religión y creencias
- A secular private garden. The Listening to the Rain Pavilion and others were once retreats for scholars and are now simply spaces to visit
- just keep quiet.
