Varanasi is the holy city of Hindus, said to have been founded by Shiva, and its rites have continued unbroken for thousands of years. The stone ghats stretching for kilometres along the west bank of the Ganges are the stage of city life: bathing and prayer at dawn, laundry drying by day, and at night Dashashwamedh Ghat ablaze with lamps for the solemn Ganga Aarti.
Costumbres locales
- At the Ganga Aarti held every evening, priests chant while holding up fire lamps — a religious ritual visitors may watch openly
- a boat trip on the river is the classic way to see the whole sweep of the ghats.
Religión y creencias
- Hindus believe that dying in Varanasi and having one's ashes scattered in the Ganges brings release from rebirth
- Manikarnika Ghat is the famous cremation ghat, and its rites are sacred and solemn — photography is forbidden, so keep your distance and don't gawk or make noise.
