Por qué es tan popular
The winter illuminations of the World Heritage gasshō-zukuri village each January–February are the 'top draw' of winter Japan travel on Instagram and Xiaohongshu. In 2026 (the 40th year) there were only four evenings: 12, 18 and 25 January and 1 February, 17:30–19:30, by reservation only; time-lapse videos of the 'observation-deck night view' on YouTube easily reach a million views.

Contexto cultural
Gasshō-zukuri are steep thatched-roof buildings designed to withstand heavy snow ('gasshō' as in hands pressed together in prayer), and Ogimachi village continues the spirit of 'yui' mutual aid — the whole village rethatches roofs together every year. Inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1995, it is a living fossil of Japan's farming communities.
Costumbres locales
- During the illuminations there are traffic restrictions and ticket checks, and those without tickets cannot enter
- keep to the designated routes and don't step into private gardens or fields
- keep quiet at night — this is a village where people live, not a theme park.
Religión y creencias
Temples such as Myōzen-ji (Jōdo Shinshū) dot the village, and gasshō villages also preserve folk faiths such as 'dōsojin' roadside gods. Remove your hat and speak softly when visiting temples.

Consejos de viaje
- You must book months ahead: accommodation + illumination packages are allocated by lottery each October, and day visitors need to grab a car-park reservation (first come, first served)
- be sure to wear non-slip snow boots and prepare for −10°C
- we recommend staying in Takayama or Kanazawa and taking a bus
- spots at the observation deck (Shiroyama Tenshukaku) are limited to overnight guests or bus-tour places.
