Por qué es tan popular
About 100 moss-covered stone lanterns stand quietly in line along a cedar-lined approach, a scene like 'the entrance to another world' that has gone viral on Instagram, TikTok and Xiaohongshu; with the added aura of being a 'sacred site' for 'Hotarubi no Mori e' and 'Natsume's Book of Friends' and a filming location for 'Rurouni Kenshin: The Final', it has become Kyushu's best-known shrine.
Culture
Cultura y costumbres
Contexto cultural
Said to have been founded in ancient times (the age of Emperor Sujin), it honours Izanagi, Izanami and 'Iwagimi Daishōgun'; the Ugeto-iwa rock behind the main hall is said to have been kicked through by Kihachi Hōshi, and it's prayed to for 'passing exams and certain victory'. The 'yūjaku' (profound tranquillity) of a deep-mountain shrine is the height of Japanese aesthetics.
Costumbres locales
- The stone steps of the approach are slippery (most beautiful and most slippery in rain and mist), so wear non-slip shoes
- pray with 'two bows, two claps, one bow'
- don't climb the stone lanterns or touch the moss
- keep silent.
Religión y creencias
- Shinto. The sacred 'nagi' tree has unbroken leaf veins, symbolising 'bonds that never break', making it a famous spot for finding love
- the Ugeto-iwa rock is a power spot for praying for victory. Receive goshuin stamps respectfully at the shrine office.
