Por qué es tan popular

Although it's a national Place of Scenic Beauty, it's hidden in the mountains of Kyushu and hard to reach (2 hours 15 minutes' drive from Miyazaki Airport), so foreign visitors and tour groups are rare. It is where the 'descent of the heavenly grandson' of Japanese myth took place — revered as a sacred place by those who know, unheard of by those who don't.

Contexto cultural

A gorge of columnar basalt (80–100 m high, 7 km long) formed by eruptions of Mount Aso; Manai Falls (a 17-m drop) is one of 'Japan's 100 waterfalls'; Takachiho is the stage of the myths of 'Ama-no-Iwato' and 'Ama-no-Yasukawara', and every night 'Yokagura' sacred dances are performed at Takachiho Shrine.

Costumbres locales

  • When rowing, follow staff instructions and don't get too close to the falls
  • the walking trail has many steps, so wear comfortable shoes
  • follow Shinto etiquette when worshipping
  • when watching Yokagura, don't wander around and turn off your flash.

Religión y creencias

  • A heartland of Shinto myth: Takachiho Shrine, Amanoiwato Shrine and Ama-no-Yasukawara are all sacred to the legends of Amaterasu. Pray with 'two bows, two claps, one bow'
  • there are many kinds of goshuin
  • the stacked-stone towers at Ama-no-Yasukawara carry people's wishes — don't knock over others' towers.
