Por qué es tan popular
In Yasugi, Shimane, in the San'in region, far from the golden tourist route, it sees very few foreign visitors or tour groups; yet it has been named 'Japan's best garden' by the US 'Journal of Japanese Gardening' for 23 consecutive years (to 2025) and is the only three-star sight in San'in in the Michelin Green Guide — a pilgrimage site for connoisseurs and a blind spot for most.

Cultura y costumbres
Contexto cultural
Founded in 1970 by Adachi Zenkō, a businessman from Yasugi, who believed that 'gardens and Japanese paintings are best appreciated together'; the collection includes modern masterpieces by Yokoyama Taikan, Kitaōji Rosanjin and others, and the garden itself is designed as a three-dimensional painting using 'shakkei' (borrowed scenery).
Costumbres locales
- The gardens are for viewing only and can't be entered — admire them quietly through the glass
- don't comment loudly inside the museum (Japanese visitors treat art museums as places of contemplation)
- turn off flash, and photography is banned in some galleries.
Religión y creencias
None. The dry landscape and white-sand-and-pine gardens embody Zen aesthetics, and the spirit of 'emptiness' and 'ma' (space) is the best thing to contemplate.
