Por qué es tan popular
A silver-mine site inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2007, yet one of Japan's 'quietest World Heritage Sites' — in the mountains of Shimane, hard to reach, with far fewer visitors than Shirakawa-gō or Himeji Castle. Many people know that 'Sengoku Japan produced a third of the world's silver', but few actually come to Ōmori.

Contexto cultural
Silver was discovered in 1526, and in the 16th–17th centuries Iwami silver reached the world through Portuguese hands, funding the armies of the Sengoku warlords; the mining town of 'Ōmori' preserves samurai residences and the remains of the magistrate's office; the 'Ryūgenji Mabu' mine shaft can be entered, warm in winter and cool in summer.
Costumbres locales
- Keep to the designated routes in the heritage area and don't enter mine shafts that aren't open
- Ōmori is a living town, so don't peer into homes
- when cycling, give way to pedestrians and don't ride side by side.
Religión y creencias
No major shrine. Miners once worshipped the 'mountain god', and Sahimeyama Shrine (Shinto) is the miners' guardian — be respectful when visiting.
