Universal Studios Japan
ユニバーサル・スタジオ・ジャパン · Konohana, Osaka
Asia's first Universal Studios, an adrenaline park where 'movies meet games'. Super Nintendo World (a world first in 2021, expanded with 'Donkey Kong Country' at the end of 2024) lets you 'play' your way into Mario's world, with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Minion Park and the Flying Dinosaur coaster taking turns — and 2026 is its 25th anniversary, with limited-time events throughout.
Antes de ir · Know before you go
- The park's cardinal sins: cutting in line, saving places ('my friend's up ahead' will get you removed from the queue) and sneaky filming on rides. On busy days Super Nintendo World requires an 'area timed-entry ticket' (from the app) — don't try to force your way in without one
- queue for the wristband interactive games and don't hog the devices. Halloween costumes have strict rules (no gory or violent make-up, no face coverings, no imitation uniforms, etc.), and violators will be asked to leave. Re-entry is not allowed in principle
- resold tickets and QR tickets from unofficial channels will be voided, so don't be tempted by cheap touts. Smoke only in designated areas

Contexto cultural
USJ is Kansai's totem of 'fun'. It opened in 2001 when Osaka's economy was in the doldrums, and turned a waterfront industrial zone into the most exuberant dream factory in Japan; with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2014 and Nintendo World in 2021, USJ evolved from a 'movie theme park' into an 'IP universe'. Kansai people are outgoing, and the park is full of 'nori' (vibe) — the staff are even more excited than the visitors, and the screaming chorus of zombie hordes and guests at the Halloween Horror Nights is an autumn tradition in Osaka. It's also a school-trip mecca: groups of secondary-school students in uniform holding class flags are a scene of youth unique to USJ.
Costumbres locales
- Queuing at USJ is 'order amid Kansai-style excitement': popular rides have queues of 90–180 minutes, and quietly scrolling on your phone and eating popcorn in line is normal
- staff regularly announce waiting times and hand out timed-entry tickets. Solo visitors can save half the time with Single Rider
- families with small children can use Child Switch (taking turns to ride). Purchases above a threshold in the park are eligible for tax refunds (bring your passport and keep receipts)
- a popcorn bucket and a Minion headband are the 'park-entry trio'. During Halloween (September to early November) costumes are allowed within the rules
- at other times cosplay is not permitted.
Religión y creencias
- USJ is a commercial entertainment facility with no religious character, so no worship etiquette is needed. But photography and filming are strictly banned on rides (for safety and copyright), so put away selfie sticks in queues
- before riding, store your belongings as directed (some rides use JPY 100 coin lockers, refunded after use). During Horror Nights you may not touch the zombie performers — please don't touch or chase them either, and don't push others when you get scared. At stunt shows such as WaterWorld, the front-row 'splash zone' gets soaked, so sit further back if you mind.

Lo que aprecian los locales DO
- Osaka people do USJ like seasoned regulars: annual-pass holders (prices vary by tier) drop by after work for two or three rides and leave
- local high-school students treat Halloween Horror Nights as a 'coming of age', dressing up as ghosts in groups and competing to scream loudest. Kansai families love the butterbeer and interactive wands in the Harry Potter area (waving your wand at designated spots triggers effects)
- couples must ride 'Hollywood Dream' (the coaster where you choose your own soundtrack), and the night-time lit-up version is a classic spot for confessions of love. Whenever a limited-time event appears (such as a tie-in with a popular anime), local otaku are first in line on a 'pilgrimage'.

Consejos de viaje
- [Tickets and booking] Admission is a 'date-specific Studio Pass', bought from the official online ticket store or authorised agents (Klook, Trip.com, KKday, etc.)
- dynamic pricing applies from 1 September 2026, so buying early is cheaper. A 1-Day pass costs about JPY 8,400–11,900 for adults (6 tiers), JPY 5,500–7,400 for children aged 4–11 and JPY 7,600–10,700 for over-65s
- under-4s are free
- there's also a 1.5-day pass (entry after 15:00 on the first day, from JPY 13,600) and a 2-day pass (from JPY 16,000). The official online store doesn't accept UnionPay or Alipay, so visitors from China are advised to use authorised agents. The date is fixed when you buy
- some ticket types can be changed (those bundled with an Express Pass cannot).
- [Fast passes and priority entry] The Express Pass must be bought separately and doesn't include admission: Express 4/7/8/Premium are graded by the number of rides included, with dynamic pricing (about USD 78–285 depending on the date), while stocks last. When buying, check whether the version includes 'guaranteed entry to Super Nintendo World' — the most recommended is the Express 4 that includes 'Mine-Cart Madness + Bowser's Challenge' (best value), or Express 7 if you want to do everything. Express holders use the priority lane at the time slots printed on the pass
- arriving late may void it.
- [Queuing culture and etiquette] The park often opens 30–60 minutes before the official time, so queue at the gate an hour early
- once inside, first get a Nintendo area timed-entry ticket in the official app (essential on busy days) or head straight for the Flying Dinosaur or Hollywood Dream. Keep quiet in queues and don't cut in
- ask staff about Single Rider and Child Switch.
- [Avoiding peak-time pitfalls] Avoid weekends, long weekends, school holidays and Halloween weekends
- weekdays are best. Essentials: trainers, a power bank, JPY 100 coins (for lockers), your own water bottle (there are free water fountains) and your passport (for tax refunds). Suggested route: head straight for Nintendo World at opening (Bowser's Challenge → Yoshi → Donkey Kong) → Harry Potter area at noon (photos + lunch) → Minions / WaterWorld show in the afternoon → coasters in the evening (fewer people, beautiful night views). If budget allows, consider the 3-hour VIP tour (a guide takes you on the four most popular rides with a dedicated lane).
Notas sobre mapas y transporte
- Paste 'ユニバーサル・スタジオ・ジャパン' into Google Maps to pinpoint it (2-1-33 Sakurajima, Konohana-ku, Osaka)
- searching the abbreviation 'USJ' also works. For transport search 'ユニバーサルシティ駅' (Universal City Station, JR Yumesaki / Sakurajima Line). The English 'Universal Studios Japan' works too. Note: USJ in Osaka is different from the Universal Studios in Singapore, Hollywood and Orlando — add 'ジャパン' or 'Osaka' to avoid confusion
- areas inside the park can be searched separately as 'スーパー・ニンテンドー・ワールド' and 'ウィザーディング・ワールド・オブ・ハリー・ポッター'.
