The climax of Tenjin Matsuri, one of Japan's three great festivals: about 100 boats parade on the Ōkawa while about 3,000 offering fireworks light up the Osaka summer night.

  • Taboos: treating the offering fireworks as an ordinary fireworks show and messing about, with no respect for the rites

Contexto cultural

Tenjin Matsuri began in 951 (Tenryaku 5) as the grand festival of Osaka Tenmangū, honouring Sugawara no Michizane, god of learning, and with Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and Tokyo's Kanda Matsuri is one of Japan's three great festivals. The eve festival is on 24 July and the main festival on the 25th, and the land procession (rikutogyo, a mikoshi procession) and boat procession (funatogyo) have continued for a thousand years. The offering fireworks are a modern addition that has become the festival's indispensable climax; the sight of 'boats and fireworks intertwined' symbolises the 'the livelier the better' character of Osaka's merchant city.

Costumbres locales

  • As a religious festival, watch in a spirit of 'worship': many people pray at Osaka Tenmangū first and then go to the riverside. It's traditional to put your palms together and bow towards the mikoshi as the boat procession passes. Participants on about 100 boats perform the 'Ōsaka-jime' (Osaka-style rhythmic clapping), and spectators on the banks often clap along in response — a moment when people and gods celebrate together. Never throw things at the boats or shout abuse
  • follow staff directions within the festival area.

Religión y creencias

  • The most religious of all ten displays: the fireworks are a sacred offering to Sugawara no Michizane (Tenjin). Tenjin Matsuri itself is the grand festival of Osaka Tenmangū
  • the boat procession on 25 July invites the deity onto the 'gohōren-sen' boat to tour the Ōkawa and pray for Osaka's prosperity, while the offering fireworks are the highest tribute, entertaining gods and people with light and sound. The whole festival is a perfect blend of Shinto ritual and civic revelry.

No lo haga DON'T

  • Taboos: treating the offering fireworks as an ordinary fireworks show and messing about, with no respect for the rites
  • making noise or littering in the Tenmangū grounds
  • dressing too revealingly or behaving badly (the festival is a sacred rite)
  • making noise in the residential areas around Tenmangū on the way home. Locals often say 'Tenjin-san no omatsuri ya' ('it's Tenjin's festival') — reverence is basic.

Lo que aprecian los locales DO

Osaka people love the 'boat procession plus fireworks' combination and feel that just watching the fireworks doesn't count as really experiencing Tenjin Matsuri
