Held on 15 August, the main day of Obon: about 40,000 shells rise from the lake, and the natural acoustics of the surrounding mountains make it known as 'fireworks you feel with your whole body'.

Antes de ir · Know before you go

  • Taboos: laughing and being loud during the requiem fireworks
  • throwing rubbish into the lake or leaving it in the lakeside parks
  • honking or making noise late at night in residential areas (most of the lakeshore is residential). During Obon, locals most abhor anything that 'desecrates the ancestral spirits' — staying solemn and tidy is the best way to respect your hosts.

Contexto cultural

It began in 1949 as part of post-war recovery and promotion of tourism on Lake Suwa, and later became fixed on the main day of Obon, gradually taking on the meaning of the welcoming and sending-off fires that 'greet the spirits of ancestors and light their way home'. Locals see the 15 August fireworks as 'the climax of Obon', and many who work elsewhere come home specially. Its scale of about 40,000 shells and its unique launches over the lake keep it firmly among the most popular displays in Japan.

Costumbres locales

  • The solemn atmosphere of Obon is the backdrop: many families visit graves by day and watch the fireworks together at night, in a spirit of remembrance. Neighbours picnicking on mats by the lake share food with each other. Avoid standing for long during the display
  • applauding after the finale is customary. Local ryokan and minshuku often ask guests to cooperate with staggered departures. Fireworks and private bonfires are banned on the lakeshore, and protecting the lake environment is a shared value.

Religión y creencias

Deeply tied to Obon, the Buddhist festival of remembering ancestors: 15 August is its main day, and the fireworks are seen as a ritual of light 'welcoming and sending off ancestral spirits'. The 'chinkon hanabi' (requiem fireworks) at the opening are set off to console the spirits. The sphere of worship of Suwa Taisha, one of Japan's oldest shrines, covers the whole lake, and Shinto and Buddhist customs mingle here, giving the display a dual character of civic festival and religious remembrance.

Locals love the barrages over the water and the 'music-synchronised fireworks', and can talk at length about the feat of 'semicircular bursts opening on the lake surface'

Consejos de viaje

  • The best viewing spots are the paid sajiki seats around Lakeside Park in Suwa City, sold each summer through official channels and highly sought after
  • in the free lakeside areas, claim a spot on the morning of the day. From 2026 the official car parks (about 2,500 spaces) and nearby private car parks require advance booking through akippa, opening on 15 July — drivers must book ahead. There are large-scale traffic restrictions around Lake Suwa on the day, so we strongly recommend taking the JR Chūō Line to Kami-Suwa Station and walking. Fireworks 19:00–21:00. Held rain or shine
  • cancelled in stormy weather.
