Eastern Japan's greatest night festival: giant warrior lanterns about 5 m tall and 9 m wide parade through the city centre to cries of 'Rassērā!' and the boom of great drums, followed by thousands of 'haneto' dancers in floral costumes, as about 2 million spectators turn the summer night in front of Aomori Station into a river of fire. Visitors can rent the proper costume and join the haneto — Japan's most participatory festival of national-treasure status.

Antes de ir · Know before you go

  • Taboos: touching the washi surface of the lanterns, misreading or misspelling 'Nebuta', and passing off flip-flops or sandals as haneto costume
  • never cut across the course when the procession is passing — that's a safety red line.

Contexto cultural

It grew from the custom of floating lanterns away, introduced in the Nara period, which merged with the Tsugaru region's 'nemuri-nagashi' rite for driving off evil and gradually evolved into giant warrior-shaped lanterns carrying prayers to ward off evil and for a good harvest. Designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1980, it draws about 2 million visitors from Japan and abroad every year and is the centrepiece of summer tourism in Tōhoku. For Aomori people the Nebuta festival is a 'summer coming-of-age', and neighbourhood 'Nebuta associations' are very close-knit.

Costumbres locales

  • Haneto dancers must wear the proper costume (white under-robe, bells, flower decorations and a woven hat)
  • rent a costume and you can join the procession for free
  • when watching, never enter the parade roadway, and don't block others' view with umbrellas or tall tripods
  • take your rubbish with you
  • crowds are biggest on 7 August, the fireworks day, so plan your exit in advance. Shouting 'Rassērā' along with everyone is the most popular way to cheer, and locals are happy to teach visitors the steps.

Religión y creencias

  • It shares its origins with the Tanabata lantern-floating and Obon 'sending off the dead' customs
  • the warrior figures are meant to ward off evil, and the night parade of lit lanterns is itself a purification of summer's evil spirits, giving it the character of a 'fire festival'. But in essence it is a folk seasonal festival rather than a particular shrine's festival, with only a light Shinto character. The modern festival is closely tied to Aomori City and tourism promotion — a summer festival in which the whole city takes part.
