A 400-year-old 'fools' dance' — 'the dancers are fools and the watchers are fools; if we're all fools, we might as well dance' — tens of thousands of dancers move through the city to the 'zomeki' rhythm of shamisen, taiko, bells and flutes, setting it alight. About 1.3 million visits pour into Tokushima each year, and the whole city becomes a giant open-air stage.

Contexto cultural

Theories of its origin include celebrations for the completion of Tokushima Castle by Hachisuka Iemasa in 1586 and an evolution from Bon dancing; the 'ahō' (fool) spirit expresses popular revelry. After the war it became a symbol of Tokushima's recovery. The 'niwaka-ren', which visitors can join on the spot, lets anyone dance, making it the most open of traditional dance festivals and the soul of summer in Shikoku.

Costumbres locales

  • At the performance venues don't break into the dancers' lines
  • if you join a 'niwaka-ren', wear simple clothes and follow the instructors
  • don't fire flashes straight at dancers
  • clapping to the rhythm and calling 'Yattosā' are welcome, while booing is absolutely taboo. Men's dance raises both hands above the head and women's dance uses elegant small steps — if you imitate, respect the original styles.

Religión y creencias

  • It evolved from the nembutsu and Bon dances that welcome and send off ancestral spirits at Obon, with a strong Buddhist Obon character
  • today Awa Odori has gone beyond religion to become a cultural symbol of Tokushima identity. Over time it has become a secular summer festival for the whole city, with little sense of religious ritual and plenty of revelry.
