Historia
11:02 a.m.
At 11:02 a.m. on 9 August 1945, an atomic bomb exploded about 500 m above this spot. The blast wave, heat rays of thousands of degrees and radiation destroyed everything around; about a third of Nagasaki's urban area was destroyed, and 150,000 people were killed or injured. Near the hypocentre you can still see remnants of the walls of the destroyed Urakami Cathedral.

Peace Park commemorates the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on 9 August 1945. Completed in 1955 near the hypocentre, it includes remnants of the concrete walls of Urakami Cathedral. At its north end stands the 10-m Peace Statue by the Nagasaki-born sculptor Kitamura Seibō. A black stone column at the hypocentre marks the spot directly beneath the explosion: about a third of Nagasaki was destroyed and 150,000 people were killed or injured.
