The Fairy-Tale King's private retreat

Ludwig II wanted to escape the constraints of the Munich court, so he built Neuschwanstein in the northern foothills of the Alps as a private retreat and a tribute to Wagner. Work began in 1869, funded by the king's private fortune and extensive borrowing, not by Bavarian public funds. The king died in 1886, and the castle opened to the public soon after his death. In 2025 Neuschwanstein was inscribed as a World Heritage Site together with the king's other palaces.

Contexto cultural

Begun in 1868, the king built it for the knightly world of Wagner's operas, and its Singers' Hall and Throne Room are the height of Romantic fantasy. Yet the king lived there only 172 days before his mysterious death, and the castle opened to visitors soon after — a palace built to escape reality that became the whole world's collective image of a 'fairy tale'.

Germany: most shops close on Sundays

  • Shop for food and essentials on Saturday
  • If you need to shop on Sunday, go to shops at railway stations, airports or petrol stations
  • Planning a shopping trip for Sunday

There is no penalty — you will just find everything closed. Sunday is protected as a day of rest by the constitution, and each state allows only a few 'open Sundays' a year.
