Kyoto Gion Matsuri
祇園祭 · Kyoto
First among Japan's three great festivals: Yasaka Shrine's festival, going back more than 1,150 years, sees 33 yamahoko floats — 'mobile art museums', the tallest over 25 m — process to the 'konchikichin' of Gion-bayashi music, and all of July in Kyoto is steeped in the festival. The floats are hung with textiles imported from China and Europe, truly 'museums on the move'.
Antes de ir · Know before you go
- Taboos: treating the Gion Matsuri as just a 'float parade', being rude or rowdy in front of mikoshi and floats, and asking 'which one is the most famous?' (equality among neighbourhoods is an iron rule).

Contexto cultural
It began in 869 as a goryō-e ceremony to calm an epidemic, praying to 'drive away disease'. The floats' decorations bring together imported tapestries and arts and crafts such as Nishijin weaving; in 2016 it was inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list as part of 'Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festivals'. On Yoiyama nights Shijō-dōri becomes pedestrian-only, and the 'byōbu matsuri', when machiya display folding screens, show the essence of Kyoto townspeople's culture; the split into an earlier and a later procession has continued for a century.
Costumbres locales
- Yoiyama crowds are enormous, so don't walk against the flow or linger in the middle of the road for photos
- the floats belong to each neighbourhood, so don't climb or touch them
- 'chimaki' are amulets bought to hang by the front door, not to eat
- purify your hands before praying at Yasaka Shrine
- during the 'tsuji-mawashi' (turning at corners), step back as staff direct. Buying chimaki from the floats is a classic way to take part.
Religión y creencias
- The festival of Yasaka Shrine (Gion-sha), whose principal deity is Susanoo (Gozu Tennō), is in essence an epidemic-quelling rite of 'goryō' faith
- on the evenings before the procession, Yoiyama lanterns and Gion-bayashi music together create the summer-night atmosphere of the thousand-year-old capital. The mikoshi processions of the Shinkōsai on 17 July and the Kankōsai on the 24th are the core Shinto rites
- the yamahoko procession is a subsidiary procession that welcomes and sends off the deities.
