Por qué es tan popular

With Arashiyama in Kyoto and Yabakei it is one of 'Japan's three great gorges', yet the least known — in the south of Iwate, the gorge can only be explored by 'funakudari' (wooden boat). The 90-minute round trip, with the boatman sculling and singing the 'Geibi Oiwake', is a hidden-gem experience for 'those in the know'.

Contexto cultural

'Geibi' means 'lion's nose', describing the gorge's giant rock; since the 1910s it has been a destination for writers and artists, and in 1927 it was chosen as one of the '100 Landscapes of Japan'; the boatmen's 'oiwake' folk songs and 'tama-nage' (throwing coins at the Lion's Nose rock to make a wish) are rituals passed down for a century.

Costumbres locales

  • Wear a life jacket on the boat and sit tight
  • don't stand up or put your hands or feet outside the boat
  • listen quietly while the boatman sings
  • don't throw rubbish into the river.

Religión y creencias

  • No particular religion. 'Bishamon-kutsu' deep in the gorge enshrines Bishamonten (Buddhism)
  • put your palms together as you pass.
