Por qué es tan popular
The stream path from Nenokuchi on Lake Towada to Yakeyama is about 14 km and takes 3–5 hours on foot, and getting around Aomori is inconvenient in the first place, which naturally filters out photo-op tour groups; most visitors stay by Lake Towada, and few go deep along the stream. It's a hiking secret 'known only to those in the know'.

Contexto cultural
Oirase is a special protection zone of Towada-Hachimantai National Park; its waterfalls, such as Hōryō Falls and Ashura-no-nagare, have been sketched by writers and painters since the Meiji era. The name 'Oirase' is linked to an Ainu word for 'where the waters flow in'.
Costumbres locales
- The stream path is narrow, so keep left and give way to people coming the other way
- don't stray off the path onto the moss and forest floor
- don't throw things into the stream or fish
- take all rubbish with you.
Religión y creencias
No particular religion. Towada Shrine (Shinto) on the shore of Lake Towada is a centre of mountain worship — be respectful if you stop to pray.
